In response to queries from The Straits Times, an NEA spokesman said that its investigations into earlier incidents in Jurong, where a couple had been seen pumping out the contents of grease traps serving eateries nearby, revealed that the waste oil collected was sent for processing into biodiesel.
SINGAPORE - Two men extracting used oil in Toa Payoh on Monday morning bolted when police approached, Lianhe Zaobao reported.
The boss of the company the men work for claimed that they held a licence from the National Environment Agency (NEA). But the name of the company, Oil Village Singapore, was not found on the agency's list of licensed waste collectors on its website, the Chinese daily said."
This is MOST disturbing!
Lessons for me are:
1. when you import migrants in massive number, are you prepare for some of them, even if it is just a small % of them, to IMPORT their 'WORST practices' to our lands?;
2. this 'gutter oil' thingy is nothing news in China. Even in Hong Kong, the locals there were SHOCKED to learn that some of their Hong Kong manufacturers were producing gutter oil too. Most would said gutter oil is BAD for health and unfit for human consumption really BUT there are some who said it is alright since it had been 'chemically cleansed'!;
3. for me this gutter oil practice SHOULD NEVER be allowed to take root now that we have discovered some people are collecting and processing them. There should be NO tolerance for the people who produce this gutter oil. They MUST be caught and, hopefully, our laws are ready to deal heavily with them.
When you important massive amount of foreigners, with varying degree of quality of people, you MUST be ready to have adequate ENFORCEMENT resources too. This is been found short with the Little India riot, the many foreigners illegally renting out their HDB resales flats, and many other small but troubling infringements that can add up big time!!
