1. Recent Fatal Accident Involving 2 Young Brothers
This has generated a lot of discussions and emotions. As with any fatal accident, the driver (and his/her family) and the victims' family are deeply affected.
Hopefully the causes were identified and something concrete can be taken to prevent another similar accident from happening again.
The father of the kids have said publicly that he has forgiven the driver. He has also advised all drivers to be careful when driving as he wish nothing like this ever happened to other family.
The Traffic Police was asked to increase their presence and enforcement on dangerous driving. One of the Member of Parliament (MP) called for stricter requirement on heavy truck drivers. And some other unhelpful accusations and 'shooting-of-the-mouth' without any regards to the feeling of the people involved.
Whatever the case, this fatal accident will highlight the danger of the road - for now. The longer term solution has to be to reduce human errors as much as possible. That means better road safety design, better drivers'/cyclists and other road users' education, and stricter enforcement.
2. 'Drivers don't control themselves' - The New Paper Feb 2, 2013
SINGAPORE - She's employed to keep children safe from the traffic around the primary school.
But in the one month she has been with Telok Kurau Primary School, the traffic warden, who wanted to be known only as Madam Lee, has seen it all.
And there are the impatient ones who screech to a halt, stopping just inches from her at the last minute when she's helping a pupil cross the road. Some drivers hurl verbal abuse and others threaten her.
"Most drivers don't respect my authority and they are always in a rush. Sometimes they honk at me when I raise my 'Stop' sign.
"The road is dangerous because drivers don't control themselves," she told The New Paper on Wednesday."
Interesting follow up piece to the fatal accident involving 2 young school kids and a cement mixer truck whose driver, ironically is a safety driving instructor in his company training younger drivers.
While there are a lot of publicity surrounding the fatal accident involving the 2 young kids, this story shows that NOT many drivers are reminding themselves of such a tragic incident. Perhaps many do not have kids or they believed that other drivers will be more patient and careful with 'their' kids when driving!
A sad sad situation to learn that some of these drivers even hurled verbal abuses and threaten the 'school traffic warden' who is there to ensure safety of the kids during the school hours.
This scene is probably played out every day in every school in Singapore. Is it luck that we don't have more tragic accidents? Or that many schools have better designed pick-up-and-drop-off system?
What with the education of the parents who are sending their kids to school? What with the KIDS reminding or even 'boycotting' or 'shaming' their parents IF they MISbehaved?
Will the adult drivers THINK for themselves and calm down. Many things happened to keep our kids safe on the road.
Everyone just have to keep doing the right things right.
