channelnewsasia.com: "Israeli, Palestinian leaders to resolve issues in a year -Posted: 03 September 2010
WASHINGTON: The Israeli and Palestinian leaders have pledged to work towards a resolution of all the core issues of disagreement within a year with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel.
They have agreed to develop a framework for a permanent peace deal during talks held in Washington, and also to meet for direct talks every two weeks in the region.
US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has said core issues between the Israelis and Palestinians could be resolved within one year.
'If you move forward in good faith and do not waiver in your commitment to succeed on behalf of your people, we can resolve all of the core issues within one year,' Mrs Clinton said."
An ambitious initiative. Some will say it has no chance of succeeding. Some are hopeful. It is easier to be the former than to be the latter. Yet, if there is to be breakthrough and something truly significant to celebrate in the Middle East, this has to be the most important and impactful event if it succeeded!
Lessons for me are:
1. you need to dream the impossible to truly achieve the admirable;
2. it will not happened if you think it won't for sure. Yet, if you think it is possible, alternatives start appearing;
3. the best, or so called, best and most skilled negotiators will succeed with each other if either of them are not willing to compromise. What do they really want? what are they willing to trade? This can only be decided by themselves. The goal must be co-existence peacefully so that they can live, work and prosper together side-by-side.
May this initiative produces something the world thought could never be possible!! Go Mr. Nathanyahu and Mr. Abbas.
